Roads closed in Forsyth County after heavy rain

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. -

Forsyth County deputies had to close several roads on Wednesday because of water left behind by heavy rain.

Sheriff's deputies closed Cantrell Road to traffic after Dawsonville resident Beth Delatorre phoned to say that the road was close to washing away.

"I live up on the hill, and when I looked down my drive, this whole road was a river. I mean it was flowing fast," said Delatorre.

Delatorre has lived in a house near Julian Creek for 30 years and said she'd never seen it that high before.

"I'm glad they came on out because I was concerned that the road could collapse. So, I'm glad they came out and blocked the road," she said.

Rising rain water washed away the creek bank and collapsed the culvert underneath the road, making it unsafe to travel.

Deputy Doug Rainwater of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office says it will be sometime before they re-open the road.

"The last word from the road department is possibly a week closure on this road to fix all the repairs," Rainwater said.

Rainwater says the rising water kept the sheriff's office busy for much of the day.

"Around 9:30 this morning, we had at least six road closures in primarily north Forsyth County. As the morning progressed, around 10:30 we started having some trees fall down in south Forsyth County. So, at one point we had at least eight roads that were completely dropped," Rainwater said.

With the exception of Cantrell Road, all roads have since been re-opened.

Forsyth County deputies are also investigating a deadly two-car accident on Old Atlanta Road near the county library. They believe it could be weather related because heavy rain was falling at the time of the crash.
