Polls closed in primary, now the wait for vote totals

DETROIT (AP) -- Polls have closed in Detroit, where voters have started the process to elect a new mayor even as the city slides toward what would be the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.
 
The two top vote-getters in Tuesday's nonpartisan primary move on to the November general election.
 
That winner will take office in January but likely will have little to no role in city finances, which currently are controlled by state-appointed emergency manager Kevyn Orr, who filed last month to take Detroit into bankruptcy.

Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon and accountant Tom Barrow are considered front-runners among the 14 candidates on the mayoral ballot. Former medical center chief Mike Duggan was kicked off the ballot over a residency issue, but waged a feverish write-in campaign.
