Fumo Arrives At Halfway House, Leaves An Hour Later

PHILADELPHIA -

A halfway house on the 300 block of Erie Avenue will be what convicted state senator Vincent Fumo will call home for the next few months. It's half a block from the local police district, but one step closer to freedom after 54 months in federal prison.

The 70-year-old Vincent Fumo spent four-and-a-half years of a 61-month sentence at a low-security federal prison in Kentucky. He was convicted in 2009 of 139 counts of conspiracy and defrauding the state and two local community groups of millions of dollars.

While Fumo stays at the halfway house, he will work in his lawyer's office for $10-an-hour answering phones and doing research. At some point he may be able to return to his mansion in Fairmount.

Even when Fumo returns to his 33 room Green Street home, the South Philadelphia political power broker is not expected to speak with the media until he completes his sentence. He faces another court hearing where the feds will ask for $800,000 more in restitution. The IRS is also chasing Fumo for close to $3 million in taxes.

Fumo will be allowed to leave the halfway house for work, medical visits, and to meet with his lawyer.  he will stay in a small dorm room cubicle until his release. Fumo's lawyer, Dennis Cogan refused comment today.

Fumo arrived at the house at 8 p.m. today and left within an hour. He is believed to be at his mansion in Fairmount.
