Loyal customers return as Charlie's Sweet Corn Stand reopens

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. (KMSP) -

The staff may be spending more time carefully inspecting each ear of corn, but everything stops at Charlie's Sweet Corn Stand when a customer pulls in.

"These guys have very, very good corn," said Heidi McCall, a loyal customer since the 1970's.

Within the past 12 months, loyal customers have rallied. They've watched as eminent domain forced the Fischbach's off their 100-year-old farm to allow the Minnesota Department of Transportation to expand Highway 169 at 93rd Avenue. The state decided that in order to make room for 70,000 drivers who pass through the area each day -- and to make the intersection safer and avoid gridlock, the farm had to go.

So, Charlie Fischbach moved his 93-year-old mother to a new house and moved his corn stand from the east side of 169 to the west side. The stand is nestled right next to road closure signs for construction.

"It was all trying to put the puzzle back together. It was quite the challenge," said Fischbach.

For the few days the corn has been ripe for the picking this season, loyal customers have been navigating tangled detour, determined to get Charlie's Sweet Corn Stand.

‘"If you see it from the freeway, you are like, 'How the heck do we get there from here?'" explained McCall. "You have to get off in Chaplin. Come back around."

The Fischbachs have been spreading word about their new address on Facebook. It's 8916 93rd Ave N. -- just across 169 with access though from Jefferson Highway.

"We are at about 35 percent of what we used to sell," Fischbach told FOX 9. "It's got to grow from this point -- one day at a time."
