Republicans want NBC, CNN to pull Hillary Clinton programs

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

She's one of the world's most famous female politicians -- having served as First Lady, a U.S. Senator and Secretary of State. Hillary Clinton will soon be the subject of a miniseries produced by NBC Universal's entertainment division; and a feature-length documentary by CNN International.

On Monday, Republican Chairman Reince Priebus called the upcoming productions "a thinly veiled attempt" to give Hillary Clinton a boost ahead of the 2016 Presidential Campaign. Many already rate her a frontrunner. If the shows are not cancelled, Priebus threatened to block CNN and NBC from broadcasting any Republican Presidential primary debates.

In the miniseries on former U.S. Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, actress Diane Lane has been cast by NBC Universal in the starring role. Earlier this summer, Lane played Superman's adoptive mother in the movie "Man of Steel."

A movie theater premiere is planned by CNN International for its feature-length documentary on Mrs. Clinton. Only later would it air on TV.

It was all too much to take for Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus. Alarmed at the prospect of glamorizing a potential 2016 Democratic nominee for President, Priebus sent NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt and CNN President Jeff Zucker an angry letter Monday:

"Out of a sense of fairness and decency and in the interest of the political process and your company's reputation, I call on you to cancel this political ad masquerading as an unbiased production."

If not, Priebus warned he would urge that Republicans "neither partner with you in 2016 primary debates nor sanction primary debates which you sponsor."

In a separate statement, Priebus added: "It's appalling to know executives at...NBC and CNN who have donated to Democrats and Hillary Clinton have taken it upon themselves to be Hillary Clinton's campaign operatives."

A CNN spokeswoman responded:

"We would encourage members of the Republican National Committee to reserve judgment until they know more. Should they decide not to participate in debates on CNN, we would find it curious, as limiting their debate participation seems to be the ultimate disservice to voters."

Priebus declared August 14 as the deadline. If the shows are not cancelled by then, the RNC will vote to ban NBC and CNN from sponsoring any Republican presidential primary debates.
