July 19th on a highway in Utah, a Collierville family was forever changed.

The Pressler's were on the way home from a vacation when a tragedy struck.

Twelve year old Jessica Pressler was ejected from the family van, severing her spinal cord.

Family friend Brandon Smith says as a father of four, he says the Pressler's have six, soon to be seven children. Smith says when a child has severe injuries, it takes more than the family to help.

Brandon Smith says, "The needs that they have are more than what one family can fulfill, it's going to take the whole community to really close that gap. I just put myself in their position, I would hope if a traumatic thing happened to my family that's beyond the scope of what one family can handle, that somebody would step up and do the same thing for me to help us out."

Smith and friends are trying to raise a hundred thousand dollars for Jessica's care, which will be in part extensive orthopedic rehab. The Shriner's hospital recently learned Jessica is recovering in Denver, but needs to be moved to a pediatric rehab hospital.

Bruce Brand with Alchymia's Shriner's says the organizations pediatric hospital's have some of the best doctor's for children in the country, "A lot of times one of the doctor's at our hospital will talk to doctor's in Denver and find out specific injuries and might make a recommendation at that point as to which hospital is best equipped to take care of a child."

Brand says the organization will fly children all over the world, even if financially their families can't afford it.

Brand says, "The children are our future, these are the most helpless among us and we were big grown men, we've had good lives, those of us that can do it, we try to step up."

With her spine severed in half, families and community members are coming together to help this 12 year old not only recover, but eventually come back home. Smith says he has no doubt, the money will be raised for Jessica. He's seen it before, and knows this community will do what it does best.

Smith says, "My family has needed things before and people have stepped up and helped out, if I've got the ability to step up and help somebody else out, I want to do that."
