Tech Check: Back-to-school and tablet choices

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

It's back-to-school time, and Georgia's tax-free holiday happens August 9 and 10.  Now might be the time to include a tablet on that shopping list, but don't worry—you don't have to spend big bucks.  This week, you might actually save big bucks instead!

The fact is that tablets are now going to school with more kids than ever before, according to Verizon.   In fact, they say a third of students in grades 4-12 already own a tablet.

Apple's iPad is certainly one of the top tablets on the market, but don't think you're missing out by going with Android instead.  There is also the Windows tablet, which has recently come down in price.

Zakir Burrow of Verizon tells us there are lots of choices, but it's important to think about what the tablet will be used for and who will be using it before making a decision.

If you're planning on reading and surfing the web, you might consider a 7-8 inch tablet instead.  They're also cheaper.  But when it comes to tablets that replace textbooks that rely heavily on graphics, tables and charts, or for drawing, you might consider a 9-10 inch screen.

This year, there are even more places to buy textbooks for tablets.  Apple, Amazon and now Google are all in the game.  A survey of college and high school student revealed nearly 70 percent of students believe traditional textbooks will be dead in five years.

There's one more thing to consider if your shopping list also includes the purchase of an expensive calculator.  There are tablet apps for nearly every kind of calculator.  Burrow says some of them are free, and they can do the same things a calculator can do.

If your student already has a tablet, you might consider accessories such as a Bluetooth keyboard, or even a backpack that has built-in battery chargers to charge devices between classes or anytime they need a boost.

During Georgia's tax-free holiday, you can make electronic purchases under $1,000.

Most people treat their dogs just like their children. However, when it comes to dog safety in the vehicle, many drivers are buckling the children up but not safely restraining their pets.
