Mom who killed sons has history of violence

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Jamina Briggs will be in Shelby County General Sessions Court Friday morning to face charges she fatally stabbed her two young sons late Wednesday in the Binghampton neighborhood of Memphis.

After she stabbed 23-month-old Jeremiah and 6-year-old Nicholas, she called police and confessed.

According to an affidavit of complaint on Aug. 1 Briggs called Memphis Police to say "she is a paranoid schizophrenic and the voices told her to do it." Once inside the house police found the two young boys face down on the couch with multiple stab wounds.

Briggs had blood on her hands when she was taken into custody.

It turns out this isn't the first violent outburst for the 29-year-old mother of three.

FOX13 News found pages of records showing Briggs has a long history of violence and mental health concerns. Even so, neighbors say they never expected her to kill her own children.

"(Wednesday) morning I dropped her and her two kids at the dentist over on Thomas and Whitten," Bonds said.

Affidavits of complaints going back as far as 2007 tell Briggs' history with domestic violence against her mother and boyfriend. They also site mental health concerns including bipolar and schizophrenia.

"The guys would be sitting around here talking, she comes outside standing on the side there and they'd be laughing and talking," Bonds said. "She'd think they'd be talking about her."

On April 25, 2008, an affidavit reports that Briggs and her boyfriend at the time entered into a physical altercation when she began to hit him and bit his arm. The boyfriend said in the affidavit that "Briggs has a temper and is bipolar and acts this way some time."

A Jan. 29, 2007, affidavit reads that Briggs hit her mother with her fist and a TV remote in the face. It continues to tell that Briggs is diagnosed with schizophrenia and did not know when she last took her medication.

A neighbor across the street from 230 Tillman St. says he spoke with Briggs and says she asked if she should take her mental health medication every day.

"She said maybe she needs to take her medication more often," Bonds said. "She said she didn't take it every day and I told her she probably should take it every day. Said she didn't."

Still, neighbors and especially mothers like Sherika Isaac, say Wednesday evening's fatal stabbings of Jeremiah and Nicholas should have never happened.

"She took it out on innocent young souls that she just wanted to get it over with," Isaac said. "That's why she called police to let them know she was in the wrong."

"Kids are going to yell and holler anyway, and maybe they got on her nerves and she just snapped," said "Bozo" Williams. "I don't know? I just hate it happened to those kids. You wouldn't think that."

"I had no idea she was in that bad of shape," Bonds added.

Tillman Street neighbors said Briggs was not supposed to have custody of her children. She even has a 9-year-old daughter.

FOX13 News reached out to the Tennessee Dept. of Children's Services but have not heard back as of Thursday evening.

Memphis police continue to investigate why she fatally stabbed her two sons.
