After months of debate over the designs for signs at the future Bass Pro Shop in Downtown Memphis, the store received a green light on its reworked plans for the signs that will be placed on The Pyramid.
But there are complaints over another Bass Pro sign - a scantily clad mermaid in a water-filled bowling ball for a proposed bowling alley inside the Pyramid Bass Pro. The logo will appear outside of "Uncle Buck's Fishbowl and Grill," a restaurant and bowling alley that will be inside the new store.
It seems some think the design is just a little too sexy.
The Downtown Memphis Commission Design Review Board approved Bass Pro's signs and design plans, but all systems are not a go, just yet.
"We really can't regulate content of the sign, that's why you heard comments from me and the public to reconsider the content of that sign," said a review board member.
Representatives for Bass Pro listening in via teleconference acknowledged concerns over the mermaid in the fish bowl and said they would consider the concerns that people expressed.
As for the Bass Pro exterior signs on The Pyramid, they'll appear on just three sides of the building. Signage on the north side were removed after Mud Island residents said it would ruin their view.
Bass Pro Pyramid is slated to open in December 2014.
