Caught On Camera: Bikes, Computers Stolen From Summer Program

The search is on for the young thieves seen in this surveillance video. They got inside East Camden Middle School and they made off with several bicycles.

Now, those bikes were actually meant for an after-school program in session right now.

FOX 29's Dave Kinchen spoke with the people who this crime really affects.

Multiple thieves broke into a gated, locked window at the school and stole the mountain bikes, thousands of dollars worth, from the summer school program.

Surveillance cameras caught the brazen bandits joyriding just after breaking into the heavily fortified building.

Police say they stole six bikes, including one that belongs to an instructor. That means fewer bikes for Taylor Chambers and his friends.

"I really want to find these people and just say, 'Why would you steal the bikes?" he said.

"What did you think when you heard someone stole these bikes from your program?" Kinchen asked.

"Humiliated," another boy said.

Part of the youth exercising program, or Cycle It, gives kids a chance to interact with the world.

"We've taken kids who are barely able to get off the sidewalk and onto the streets," program director Akram Abed said. "And now they're riding down major streets and over the Ben Franklin Bridge. So, they've sort of taken it hard, especially since it has given them such freedom."

Parent Rachel Still said, "Part of the program is that they would receive the bikes at the end of the cycling summer. So I don't know how you tell some of these kids that they won't get a bike."

The thieves also stole air pumps, computers, and electronics worth $6,000 in total.

The program has more than a dozen bikes left. But with so many missing, several kids will have to miss out on summer fun.

"And that means, less kids can come on these rides, less kids would be able to cycle through the neighborhood," Abed said.

This is the second time a Camden school has been broken into. We're told that someone broke into the Kramer School and stole computers and electronics there.
