Community members are rallying to stop Alcy Elementary, a legacy Memphis City School, from closing.
Alcy is one of a dozen schools on the recommended school closings list for 2014.
Close to 100 supporters against the closure came together Thursday evening at New Hope Baptist Church for a community meeting to show support for keeping their neighborhood school open.
Organizers say this is just the first gathering to get neighbors in the area to sign a petition, which they say they hope eventually will contain about 4,000 signatures.
They plan to take the show of strength petition to the unified Shelby County Schools board of education in hopes the board will reconsider keeping Alcy open.
It could take up to a year for the board to make its final decision on which schools to close.
