Lunch-Break Dance Parties Seek To Enliven People's Work Days

Posted: Updated:

Why wait until Friday night to cut loose on the dancefloor? A growing number of people are hitting the clubs on their lunch breaks! it's happening in New York City, and tomorrow you'll get a chance to try it in Philly.

It's Wednesday at 1:00 o'clock in the afternoon, and something different is happening in Midtown.

"I'm actually a little nervous about having video evidence," says a woman. "But it's all right."

This is probably not how you spend your lunch break, but it turns out a lot of people are shaking up the work day routine at dance parties like this one called Lunch Beat.

"People just want a break from their routine. It's really fun. They get exercise, they get out of the office," says Sarah Reynolds, an organizer of Lunch Beat NYC.

The concept originated in Sweden three years ago, and the second Manhattan event was held at the Culture Club today. A $14 admission ticket buys lunch and 60 minutes of non-stop hits, cocktails are optional.

"I work a nine to five job and I sit at a computer staring and eating my lunch at the same time. So this basically takes people out of their work comfort zone and out on the dance floor," says Isha Moor, another organizer of Lunch Beat NYC.

The participants say there's something exhilarating about putting the iPhone away and getting down.

"Any excuse to dance when I should be doing work is a good thing," says another fan, who didn't want to identify himself.

Just like on a Saturday night, there's a velvet rope outside and a killer DJ inside, but this party won't go all night. In fact, it ends abruptly at 1:30 p.m., and then it's off the dance floor and back to the cubicle.

"You have one hour to make it as fun as possible," says Moor.

The Ten Six Club in Philadelphia will hold it's own Lunch Beat Dance at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. It's located at 1709 Walnut Street.
