NY troopers ticket 53 in distracted driving detail

Posted: Updated:

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York state police say they conducted special nighttime traffic enforcement against distracted driving this week on the Taconic State Parkway in Westchester County and issued 53 tickets.

They say that included 11 tickets for using a handheld cell phone while driving and seven were issued for texting while driving.

Other alleged traffic infractions resulting in tickets Tuesday evening included speeding, not using seatbelts, improper child restraints and failure to abide by the so-called "move over law."

That law requires motorists to slow down and, where possible, move one lane over from stopped emergency vehicles like police cruisers with flashing lights on.

Original state troopers' graves get new markers

A gravestone has been dedicated at the previously unmarked burial plot of one of New York's original state troopers. Retired state police Sgt. Kevin Kailbourne of Wellsville has been leading an effort to mark the graves of every state trooper, including the originals. They were known as "campmen" because they were trained at a National Guard camp outside Syracuse after the law enforcement agency was created in 1917.
