Still no decision on charges for Detroit transit officer

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

An off-duty transit officer is suspected of shooting and killing 26-year-old Jordan Morson after an altercation at a Gulf gas station on Eight Mile and Gratiot.

After the shooting, Fox 2 learned the officer worked for the Detroit Transit Corporation policing the People Mover downtown. Unlike police, transit officers have no police power off-duty or out of their jurisdiction.

During the investigation, the transit officer told police Morson tried to take his gun, but police questioned how Morson even knew the officer was armed since the gun should have been legally concealed.

The transit cop was taken in for questioning, but later released. Morson's family fears the officer is getting special treatment, even though police have said that is not the case.

"I said, 'You're not going to allow this case to drag on because he's connected with the city and the police?' And he said, 'I want to make it clear that I don't have a problem with bringing charges to an officer if he's wrong," said Jamel Morson, Jordan's father.

60 days after the shooting, Fox 2 filed a second report asking why no charges had been filed. Less than 24 hours later, a warrant was submitted to the prosecutor's office and is still there three weeks later.

Late Tuesday, we received a statement from the prosecutor's office. It said, "We've requested some additional work from the police while we continue to actively work this case. In every case, it's critically important for us to make sure that we have all the available evidence before we make a charging decision, and this case is no different."
