The `Muggers Mile?` Guardian Angels warn of recent attacks

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One of Chicago's most popular tourist attractions is receiving negative publicity.

The Magnificent Mile is no longer making headlines for its shopping experience, but rather for its crime rate.

In recent weeks, attacks along the shopping strip are becoming more violent, with criminals using knives and guns to rob people of their valuables.

So is the Mag Mile truly dangerous? Chicago police say there have been three robberies on Michigan Avenue in the past month. But that's all of Michigan Avenue -- from the north end of the Mag Mile all through the far south side.

Even so, the Guardian Angels walked Michigan Avenue Tuesday, handing out fliers with safety tips and patrolling the area.

The group has even renamed the strip, referring to it as "The Muggers Mile."

The main targets of muggers are cell phones and electronic devices and the Angels say criminals are turning the area into their own personal ATM.
