An eleven-year-old boy was shot Tuesday outside of a house on Pelkey on Detroit's east side.

"The victim who was with the child, who has also suffered a gunshot wound, I'm not sure if he was involved in criminal activity, but if he was, shame on him," said Detroit Police Chief James Craig.

That man is believed to be the child's stepfather.

Neighbors said the house is a known drug house on the block, which police are working to confirm.

"Certainly one of the victims in the hospital, we need to talk to that person. I'm sure he has more information. He needs to share that information with us," Craig said.

Meanwhile, the search is on for the shooter, who fired a handgun. Officers used a K-9 to track his scent.

"We're confident that we should have a suspect in custody soon," Craig said.

The police chief is on a mission to make sure that citizens see that when it comes to crimefrighting in Detroit, change will come under his watch.

"Eastern District is one of the busiest districts in the city. Lots of violence. Call came in at 4:13. Officers were on the scene at 4:17. I think that standard right there is good anywhere in the country," he said.

The police precincts are also the chief's priority.

"I said the City of Detroit, police stations close at four o'clock, something is wrong with that," Craig remarked. "These police stations are the community, and so what message do we send by locking the doors?"

So the doors of your police stations will be open.

When it comes to making the streets of Detroit a safer place to be, the chief said, "I'm getting ready to go into a call to action. I did this in Cincinatti. We did it in Los Angeles. Clearly we the police can't do it alone, and there are a lot of great community members out here that believe in rolling their sleeves up and getting this job done."

Meanwhile, we were told the eleven-year-old was shot in the arm, and both shooting victims are stable and expected to be okay.
