40 for Shorty fighting Cancer

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (FOX13) -

Shorty Chambliss; one of the most storied drivers in the MidSouth.

"Oh Lord, how did I get started racing? I ran my first race at Riverside Motor Speedway in 1952," Chamblis says.

He raced from 1952 until 2006. He has won so many races he can't count them. Other drivers who talked smack about Shorty paid for it dearly. "If you pump me up I am going to getcha, but I don't know what it is about me, but that's the way I am. If any of them boys tees me off, I'm gonna get em."

Three Months ago Shorty was given a clean bill of health after beating lung cancer. "He said short man, I have you as clean as a whistle. I took thirty radiation treatments; I was there every day five days a week. I took them, I went back to the doctor and they said short man you are cancer free, I jumped up and hollered and got down on my knees and thanked the Lord you know."

The trouble is three months later the cancer has come back...the doctor has given Shorty little over eight months to live.  "I said Doc, I'm kind of like Yogi, it ain't never over until it's over, I said you write down the date and I said I guarantee you I'm gonna be here longer than what you've got down, my number is more like ten to twenty, he looks at me and says you crazy, I said, Yeah, a little bit."

Shorty says the good Lord has spared him a number of times on the track and he hopes he'll spare him again. Either way Shorty has no regrets, just blessings to count. "I have had a great life; I have lived a great life. I've always done whatever I want to do. Hey when they lay this old country boy in the ground, they can say I've done it all, and I have."

But many say Shorty ain't goin' in the dirt any time soon, unless it's on the track. That the cancer doesn't know who it picked a fight with, after all, this is Shorty, he loves to fight anything, he had a reputation for that on the track.

"Hey I don't argue, no, I ain't scared, I used to love to fight big guys, guys bigger than me, I'd whoop around 'em like a drum, they thought a machine gun went off on them, No doubt about it", Said shorty as he busts out laughing.
