ATLANTA -

Underway Monday morning, following this weekend's rough round of storms, falling trees and rising water are causing problems throughout metro Atlanta neighborhoods.

Before sunrise, crews in metro Atlanta, including the Buckhead community, stayed incredibly busy cleaning up the mess of debris caused by fallen trees. In Stone Mountain, on Goldsmith Drive, a large tree crashed down overnight onto a truck.

Fortunately, despite the damage, no one was inside of the vehicle at the time.

Resident Elizabeth Smithgall said, "We heard a loud noise. It sounded like something had happened outside, fallen into our neighbor's yard."

Elizabeth's words echoed reports of damage caused by severe weather from all around metro Atlanta. In the case of a fallen tree on Ridgeland Way in Buckhead, the tree and its limbs didn't damage property. But, that wasn't quite the case in northeast Atlanta.

A local resident said, "When I went outside, I just saw that tree from across the street… actually smashed my car."

The 100-year-old tree fell around about 2 a.m. Sunday. It fell down on wires and cars near 7th Street and Penn Avenue – just before the owners said they had a chance to cut it down.

On Collier Road at Overbrook Drive, a tree fell across the roadway, knocking down power lines. It left quite a mess for Georgia Power crews to clean up.

But, it was flood water – not fallen trees – that slowed these drivers down in DeKalb County. High standing water can easily be seen from South Hairston Road and Covington Highway as drivers plowed through trying to stall or get stuck.

Residents of a Cobb County apartment community are being forced to stay somewhere else for a third straight day. On Saturday, the foundation of their building at the Ivy Ridge Apartments washed out due to heavy rain. They were evacuated by firefighters a short time later because of fears that the building would actually collapse.
