Chris Carpenter struggles in rehab start

Posted: Updated:

Saturday night Cardinals right-hander Chris Carpenter made his second minor league rehab start. This one was with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds, in it he looked even worse than he did in his outing with Double-Springfield.

Carpenter allowed four earned runs on nine hits and two walks in 3-1/3 innings. His fastball struggled to get above 90 mph. He allowed 10 of the last 14 hitters he faced to reach base. Afterwards he told reporters “If I can’t get outs down here, never mind getting out’s up there. I didn’t feel like I was as sharp as I needed to be or should have been. I’ve got to get sharper.”
