GW Henderson Recreation center in Tunica has become a mobile military hospital of sorts serving the public.
"This mission is known as Task Force Bulldog because of the Mississippi State Bulldogs," said SSG Daniel Freeman.
Military personnel with Task Force Bulldog will be carrying out dental screenings and tooth extractions and vision and health screenings in northern Mississippi communities of Tunica, Marks, Rosedale and Clarksdale as well as West Helena Ark.
The clinics are free over the next seven days.
"We're a medical unit and we are unit and we are maintaining our competency, making sure we are able to do what we do in the military and we are making sure we are keeping our training current," said Capt. Tammy Altman with the 4224 U.S. Army Hospital in Iowa.
Operating out of the Rec Center in Tunica it's back to basics for the military doctors.
"We don't have all the labs and X-ray technology but you actually get better at really examining people and you have to be sharper with your physical diagnosis skills than you would be because you don't have cat scans and labs to do that," Capt. Altman said.
In two days Task Force Bulldog and the military service men and women here have served almost 500 people across the Mississippi Delta.
"The Army is good about serving our country both overseas and in America and there are a lot of undeserved people here and we have a great medical team in the military," said Col. Dave Bolt, a physician with the 4424 Army Hospital.
Task Force Bulldog will be operating through Thursday, July 25, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday - Saturday, and from 12-5 p.m. on Sundays.
Vision screenings are being done on Friday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Medical screenings are for non-emergency conditions. Military dental staff will be conducting exams, and pulling teeth. They are not doing fillings.
You do not need your medical records to be seen.
