Power outage hits hundreds, including police and fire headquarters

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

From Bronzeville to Burr Ridge, thousands were affected by power outages throughout the city on a hot Wednesday night.

In the South Side Bronzeville neighborhood, nearly 800 ComEd customers--including the city's police and fire headquarters--were powerless Wednesday afternoon.

ComEd crews were en route to the area around 35th Street and Michigan Avenue about 2:45 p.m., a ComEd spokeswoman said. A total of 791 customers have been affected by the outage, she said.

The cause of the outage was not yet known.

A police lieutenant said the outage affected the police and fire headquarters at 3500 S. Michigan, but it did not impact any response to emergency calls.

During the evening rush, a CTA train in The Loop near LaSalle and Van Buren was also stopped because of an outage that lasted for about 10 minutes. No one was hurt.

CTA workers say that may have been caused by a switching problem earlier in the day at Wabash.

Brown, green, orange, pink, and purple lines are now running at normal times.

And that wasn't all.  ComEd says power was lost for about 40 minutes Wednesday evening at a condo building on North Larrabee, affecting nearly 800 residents.
