Police: Women targeted garage sales with counterfeit money

Posted: Updated:
LOCUST GROVE, Ga. -

FHenry County police are looking into just how many garage sales could be the victims of a counterfeit money scam.

Officers arrested two women – whose names are not being made public – after discovering they were using counterfeit $5 and $20 bills to pay for items at garage sales in the Locust Grove area.

Authorities say they used the counterfeit money to buy electronics, clothes and more from Carlee Thomas at her garage sale this past Saturday.

"As soon as they left, I could just tell there was something not right after thinking of everything," Thomas said.

Sgt. Joey Smith says a number of flaws surfaced immediately in the fake bills, like the same serial number on numerous bills, a crease which was copied over and uneven borders.

"It should be very obvious to the holder. It should look suspicious and it should feel suspicious," Smith said.

Authorities suspect the counterfeit bills were likely used in several locations.

Thomas says her infant son is the real victim. He has a debilitating digestive disorder. She's been holding garage sales to raise money for his special formula and medical procedures which aren't' covered by insurance.

"I'm furious and I think that justice should be served," Thomas said.

Police say they're withholding the suspect's names pending their identification by suspected victims in a line-up.

The two women in custody could face up to five years in prison.

Authorities are asking that anyone else thinks they may have received counterfeit money from these women to contact the Henry County Police Department at 770-288-8200.
