ATLANTA -

Common Cause Georgia continues to gather signatures on a petition for the a public referendum on a proposed tax to fund Atlanta's new stadium.

If it succeeds, it would be up to voters to decide on the proposed hotel room tax. That would be one of the funding sources for the new billion-dollar stadium.

"Other NFL cities, they've held public referendums and the people got to decide," said William Perry of Common Cause Georgia. "We know that there are a lot of opinions on this issue, but one that's extremely important, we think, and we constantly hear is that whether people are for it or against it, they think they ought to have the right to vote on it."

Common Cause must have 35,000 signatures from Atlanta residents by August 10 to put the funding question on the ballot.
