OAK PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -

A piece of metal smashed through a windshield as a vehicle was traveling eastbound on I-696 just east of Lahser Road on Thursday afternoon.

"Just a random piece of steel from somewhere came out of nowhere, went through it looks like the upper left hand part of his windshield and struck him in the head," said Chris George.

His friend suffered a devastating head injury. The 41-year-old husband and father of a five-year-old son is in critical condition.

Witnesses who saw the accident at 4:30 p.m. Thursday told Michigan State Police the victim appeared to have a blowout, then crashed into the median wall.

A piece of metal through the windshield, a blown tire and a crash, it is not clear just what happened first, but the victim's family wants to know the origins of that flying object.

"We've got to have a couple experts come in and take a look at these different things to determine what came first, and unfortunately, we may never know," said Lieutenant Michael Shaw.

"It might not have been on the freeway at all. It could've fell off of another vehicle and just came off the overpass."

Witnesses stopped to say they had seen the crash, but Michigan State Police want to talk to anybody who might have seen something more, such as where the piece of metal may have come from.
