PHILADELPHIA -

When people saw it was the FBI searching the Schuylkill River under the Falls Bridge, many had the same reaction.

"It must be something serious," guesses Alexandria Dupree.

"Obviously there's a heightened sense of alert there," says Ariel Kaplan.

The FBI is being tight-lipped about their search. A spokeswoman would only say that an underwater search and evidence response team conducting the search is from New York.

You're wasting time and tax payers money. We had eight days of rain in a row if they're looking for something small, water comes up here and pushes it all downstream," says Mike Roscn, an onlooker.

The FBI dive teams don't just recover evidence under water, they find clues and have the ability to actually map out a crime scene, even in fast moving or murky water. They use fancy equipment like underwater SONARS and scanners that have been used in the past to find evidence buried in inches of silt under the water.

"They might be looking for a weapon down there," guesses Roscn.

We know that FBI dive team support all investigative priorities of the Bureau and travel all over the world for FBI investigations. There are only four teams like this one in the entire country.

"They're looking for a needle in a haystack. For what?" asks Roscn.

The FBI has been searching the Schuylkill River in the East Falls section since Monday. Earlier today, the FBI discovered a gun in the river. The gun was then turned over to the Philadelphia Police. But the FBI has still not said what they are looking for.
