ATLANTA -

If the recent rash of rain has you worried about your family's safety, you may want to start thinking of different ways your smartphone can actually help you in severe weather situations.

Between this year's summer weather pattern and it still being hurricane season, you can bet that there will be plenty of chances you will be stuck in a severe weather situation. You can prepare for it now and one way is to download some apps and following some safe practice tips for your smart device.

The folks at Verizon spoke with FOX 5's Doug Evans that in the event of an emergency with power out and phone lines down, texting may be your best bet. That's because cell towers can get damaged or flooded with phone calls. Text messages tend to get through faster and more effectively in an emergency.

Also, choose wisely in what weather apps you use. The FOX 5 Storm Team app give you warnings, radar, video forecasts and more.

There's an app called iMap that will replace your weather radio at home and it knows where you are which allow it to give tailored warnings for you, not just where you live, but where you are.

Before a storm, make sure you have power cords for both your car and a wall plug that are in good shape. You also may want to look into an external backup power source.

Remember that your smart technology could be an important link between you and emergency personnel or just to reach out to loved ones.
