Since the end of World War II Army surplus stores have been a fixture in nearly every city in America. Over the past few years those numbers have been reduced dramatically.
In the Memphis area there were as many as a dozen Army surplus stores but now, only one remains in Collierville, Tenn. The stores may be few in number now, but that does not mean there is lack of Army surplus.
Memphis Equipment Company located at Third and Crump near Downtown Memphis is the nation's largest Army truck and parts dealer. You can buy just about anything that the military once owned here and if they don't have it they can find it for you.
So what do people do with Army surplus vehicles? You name it. Some are turned into fire trucks others are working in the timber business. Anywhere where heavy duty trucks are needed that is where you will find heavy duty trucks that were once owned by the United States military.
A 1943 Ford Jeep all-purpose vehicle used back in World War II cost about $1,500 to $2,000. Today if you bought it, it would cost from $10,000 to $15,000.
