DETROIT (AP) - The sister of an ex-Marine held in Iran for nearly two years says her brother's condition has improved greatly in recent months.

Sarah Hekmati tells The Associated Press on Friday that Amir Hekmati has been meeting with family members, given access to books and exercising.

And in two recently received letters, Amir Hekmati writes that he is "living a very healthy life."

Sarah Hekmati says an uncle and aunt who visited her brother report he has gained weight and no longer appears gaunt as he did when he previously was held in solitary confinement.

The family says Amir Hekmati went to Iran in 2011 to visit his grandmothers. Iran accuses him of spying.

Hekmati was born in Arizona and grew up in Michigan, where his sister and parents live.
