A 20-year-old man is in custody after he told police he slashed his girlfriend's throat Friday morning during a domestic dispute at a northeast Memphis home.
The 16-year-old victim was able to flee the Winding Path Drive home sometime after 9 a.m. and call police at a neighbor's home, police said.
A neighbor told FOX13 News she saw the suspect walking down the street with what she thinks was a sword and walk into the Winding Path home moments later.
The teenage victim was rushed to The MED and is listed in critical condition.
Ulala Fortner heard sirens as Memphis Police officers converged on her neighborhood, surrounding the house.
"They started running around that house with their guns open hollering 'Come out!'," she said. "Said 'Come on out with your hands up! Come on out!'"
Fortner saw officers lead the young man out of the house in handcuffs, the same man she saw walking down the street who she thought was carrying a sword.
"It was a big, old, looked like a real sword," she said. "I don't know whether it was or not."
Detectives and crime scene investigators spent much of the morning searching the house for evidence.
Curious neighbors gathered near the house to see what was happening. Jim Fumich, a neighborhood watch captain, told FOX13 News his wife called police this week because several teens were fighting in the street.
"About two or three days ago there was over a dozen kids in the middle of the street and several of them had knives," Fumich said. He said the dozen teens were near the house of Friday's reported stabbing.
Police though, could not say if the two incidents were connected.
"We had a few problem teenagers and we were able to get rid of them," Fumich said. "But you know, there's only so much you can do."
The suspect, who has yet to be identified by police, remained on the scene and was taken into custody. It is unclear what charges he is facing.
The domstic incident remains under investigation.
