Mother of 7 killed in hit-and-run crash

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

A mother of seven was hit by a car and left to die in the street. Now, her grief stricken family is left wondering when they'll get and update from police.

Watch Taryn Asher's full video report above.

"I just knew it was her. I just knew it was her. I'm like that's my mommy," said Johanathon Knuckles.

He knew something wasn't right Wednesday night when his mom, 48 year old Venida Elledge, took too long to return from the corner store. He started re-tracing her steps, back to the corner of 7 Mile and St. Marys on Detroit's west side. That's when he saw the police lights, and his mother's body laying in the middle of the street. A victim of a hit and run.

"It's a very bad situation, and I'm hurt. My family's hurt," Knuckles said.

We're told the woman was trying to cross 7 Mile and make it to the sidewalk when a car came out of nowhere, hit her, and continued north on St. Marys.

Police say the suspect's car is missing parts of it's front bumper. Venida's family hopes someone recognizes the vehicle and contacts police.

A nearby business believes the deadly incident may have been captured by their surviellance cameras. We are working to get that video in hopes that it will help catch the driver who did this.
