DeSoto County is installing five new tornado sirens, similar to the 11 others active sirens in unincorporated parts of the county.
The five new sirens, paid through a hazard mitigation grant and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, are solar powered, omni-directional, and radio-controlled.
The new sirens are being installed at Highway 301 and DeSoto Road near the ballpark complex, the Nesbit Fire Department on Nesbit Road, the Lewisburg Fire Department on Byhalia Road, at the Buena Vista Lakes Community near Arkabutla Lake, and the Alphaba Cockrum Ingrams Mill community on Red Banks Road.
When installed, there will be 16 total tornado sirens throughout the county.
