Doctor's 8,000th baby delivery marks a generation milestone

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (MyFoxDetroit) -

Austin Brian Jones, weighing in at 7 lbs. 15 oz. made one special delivery. He was the doctor's 8,000th delivery, but there's more to the story than that.

Doctor Richard Smith, a Henry Ford obstetrician, delivered baby Austin on Monday, July 8, via a c-section baby - 24 years after Dr. Smith delivered Austin's mother, Lauren Hood, the same way.

And baby Austin made quite an entrance. Hood explains, "He was butt first, and Dr. Smith was like, 'He's peeing! He's peeing!' And they're like, 'Oh wait! They don't know what it is!' And I'm like, we do now!"

Hood and husband Andrew Jones learned right then they had a boy. They also learned that boy is the 8,000th child delivered by Dr. Smith.

"When I was having Lauren, I had complications. And just the care he gave, I knew I was in good hands, so I wanted to ensure my child was, too," explains baby Austin's grandmother, Brenda Hood.

Lauren was teaching in New Jersey for part of her pregnancy, but she traveled to Detroit just to see Dr. Smith for her pre-natal care.

"I've been delivering babies for almost 40 years, and it's been actually remarkable. It's been such a great feeling. We've seen the delivery of health care change so much since those early days, and it's remarkable where we've come as a medical community, and what we can do for women and the children these days," Dr. Smith tells Fox 2's Amy Lange.

The 61-year-old doctor adds he's not done delivering those bundles of joy. "I did 8,000, maybe I'll shoot for 10,000 because it is one of the best things to do, to help new life come into the world and work with these wonderful families."

Baby Austin's mom and dad say they're already planning for baby number two, and they're hoping for a girl, and they know just who they want to deliver her.
