CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Before Justin Bieber's sold-out show at the United Center Tuesday night, he spent a little time with Lord Stanley.

Bieber posed for a photo next to the Stanley Cup in the Chicago Blackhawks locker room Tuesday. Hawks marketing executive Peter Hassen tweeted the photo of Bieber posing with the Cup.

Within minutes of the picture circulating, fans took to social media, and they weren't happy.

We're not sure if it was Bieber's indoor sunglasses, the Cup's historical significance or the Blackhawks sweater reading "Bieber" in captain Jonathan Toews locker in the background, but it definitely rubbed people the wrong way.

Here's a sampling of some of what was on Twitter:

"Justin Bieber touched the Stanley Cup…I'm gonna go jump off a cliff now," said @JoJoDurbeck.

"Aaaand now the Stanley Cup isn't cool anymore...thanks Bieber," said @SportsNation.

"Justin Bieber got to touch the Stanley Cup. Disgrace to the game, to Chicago, and to humanity in general," said @RyanGentry4.

The pop star also made a faux-pas by standing on the team's Indian head logo while taking a photo of the Cup. Most NHL teams have an unwritten rule of not stepping on the logo in the dressing room.

The picture prompted Blackhawks player Andrew Shaw to send this tweet aimed at Bieber: "bro, no stepping on the logo."

Bieber was also seen during the Stanley Cup playoffs hanging out with Miley Cyrus and wearing a Boston Bruins cap.

All the backlash prompted the Blackhawks employee who tweeted the original photo of Bieber to later tweet this: "People need to relax. Justin Bieber reaches the same market audience that we will need to be the next Blackhawks fans."

To be fair, the Blackhawks have been getting the Cup out there for regular fans. On Wednesday, the Stanley Cup and Coach Q went to the Children's Memorial Hospital. Hospital staff was thrilled and kids and their families got to snap photos with the cup.

The player Andrew Shaw ended up dialing things back. An hour after his tweet criticizing Bieber, he sent this: "hey Justin Bieber, hope chi town treated u like they treat us! Best fans out there! #missit"

Bieber also took the time to meet and greet some fans, including doing a little dance with a family member of the Blackhawks organization.

Despite some of the hate, there were still scores of screaming girls outside of The Peninsula hotel where Bieber was staying.
