Posted: Updated:

Chat room replay as Deena Centofanti was joined by the Director of Interventional Pulmonology at Henry Ford Hospital, Dr. Michael Simoff to talk about lung disorders.

  • Every day a person takes 23,000 breaths. But if your lungs or airway is blocked by disease, breathing becomes difficult and your quality of life suffers.
  • More people in the U.S. die from lung cancer than any other cancer. Other common lung diseases: emphysema, COPD, asthma, chronic bronchitis, pneumonia.
  • Smoking is the no. 1 cause of preventable death in the U.S. and likely to cause cancer, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and others.
  • Smoking increases your risk of developing lung cancer by 23 times for men and by 13 times for women.
  • Smoking increases your risk of dying from a chronic obstructive lung disease like emphysema by 12 times.

Henry Ford Hospital offers the most advanced diagnostic therapy techniques and technology in Michigan for treating complex diseases of the lung and airway in a new 4,000 square foot bronchoscopy suite. These advances may avoid having to perform invasive surgery.

Advanced diagnostic procedures

  • Flexible bronchoscopy – Most common procedure in which the physician advances a flexible bronchoscope, or endoscope, through the patient's mouth or nose into the windpipe and into each lung. Images inside the lung are displayed on a video screen.
  • Endobronchial ultrasound guided procedure – An ultrasound of the inside of the airways.

Advanced therapeutic procedures

  • Airway stent – Using the bronchoscope, doctor inserts a stent to manage the narrowed, obstructed airways. Cancer and other benign conditions can compress the airway, making it difficult to breathe.
  • Rigid bronchoscopy – A long metal tube is inserted into the patient's windpipe and main airways, and the physician uses special tools to treat the condition.
