Is Internet bashing a problem?

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Many of us have seen people going back and forth in a heated discussion on the web. But just how bad is it? Some Memphians had a lot to say about it.

"It's just not civilized," Suzannah Parkinson said.

"It's going downhill," Andrew Morgret said.

"The Internet has become something where people, it's like a, they hide behind it," Dawn Bonner said.

"I think it's really easy online, because everybody's faceless," Ann Schmidtt said.

Dr. Robert Maichrowicz is a licensed Psychologist and Associate Director of the University of Memphis Counseling Center. He said he's seen the negative effects of bad Internet comments in counseling. He also doesn't think many people realize how damaging their comments to total strangers can be.

"For some people that's a way of life for them, blogging and making comments, it's part of their daily routine. And it also opens up a lot more opportunities to get angry and be upset," Dr. Robert Maichrowicz said.

This problem is so extreme on one small Caribbean Island, lawmakers have decided to put a stop to it. According to an AP News Report, a recently approved bill would make it a crime in Grenada to offend someone on Facebook or Twitter. It comes along with a punishment of up to three years in prison or as much as $37,000 in fines. Dr. Maichrowicz said although a similar bill would probably never get far in the United States, he understands the need.

"I think the positive part of having a bill, even if it doesn't pass, is to bring attention to the situation. It gets people talking about some of negative effects that can occur," Dr. Maichrowicz said.

He said this is something we're going to be talking about for a long time as it gets worse each day.
