Twenty-seven-year-old Zachary Apel has been identified by Memphis Police as the officer who shot and killed a suspect July 1 on Parkside.
Officer Apel and two other officers were dispatched to the 5000 block of Parkside in East Memphis after dispatched received word of a man who was armed and shooting inside a home.
Suspect identified in officer-involved shooting
The suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Johnny Taylor, was seen by Apel and two other officers crouched behind a car and bushes when the officers arrived on the street. According to police, Taylor stood and pointed his weapon at police. He was ordered to lower his firearm but refused and fired off several rounds in the direction of the officers.
Moments later, Officer Apel fired back at Taylor with his duty issued 12-gauge shotgun. He successfully struck Taylor. The suspect died from a gunshot wound. No others on Parkside were hurt.
Apel, who is 27 and assigned to the Mt. Moriah Station precinct, has been employed with Memphis Police since January 2010. He's been routinely relieved of duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
