Rockdale County Food Bank turns to community for help

Posted: Updated:

In Rockdale County, there's a community resource that helps families in need. But, this summer, it's the organization that could use some extra help.

The shelves at the Food Back of Rockdale Emergency Relief look a bit strange lately. There's normally actual food lining the floors and crates are filled to capacity.

The food bank, which operates three days a week for only two hours, sees more than 100 families in that time. Lately though, it's the food bank that's in need.

John Alread, of the Rockdale Emergency Relief, said, "When it's at full capacity, all of the crates up here are filled. Every single one."

He said, "We still see the same number of people. In fact, in the summer time, the need increases because children are out of the school. And, the other bad thing about that is the school children are our biggest donors."

With the shelves empty, food bank officials will not be able to help families like Timothy Anthony's. His household is home to himself, his wife and their four children. They've a son that just graduated from college, too.

Anthony, a disable veteran, said, "I was injured in the Army National Guard back in 1987 and over the years the injury has worsened to the point where I had to have knee replacement in July of 2011 and I haven't been back to work since."

He says he and his family are getting through the tough times thanks to places like the Rockdale Emergency Relief. But, he says he hopes other resources will also be there for others.

Anthony said, "No one person can do it all, but if we all chip in and do what we're able to do, it will amount to enough to be a blessing to families in need."

The Rockdale Emergency Relief accepts all non-perishable food items.
