PHOENIX -

A 35-year-old man was arrested Saturday night after he pointed what officers thought was an AK-47 at them and assaulted a police dog.

Officers say 35-year-old Russell McKinney come home after drinking all day and got in an argument with his girlfriend at a home near Grovers and 35th Avenue.

She locked the front door, but McKinney allegedly punched a hole in the screen door and broke a window.

When police arrived, they saw a broken window and the front door was open.

Police say shortly after they walked in, McKinney walked through the hallway carrying what they thought was an AK47 rifle.

He allegedly pointed the "gun" directly at officers and one of the officers fired several rounds at him.

The shots didn't hit McKinney and he didn't fire back at police.

McKinney later came out of the house without the rifle, but then ignored officers' commands and walked back toward the house.

Police say officers attempted to stop McKinney by deploying a stun gun and a police K-9.

McKinney allegedly punched the K-9 and eventually an electronic control device was used to stop him and take him into custody.

He was taken to the hospital to be treated for dog bites.

Police say the weapon McKinney had turned out to be an air soft gun with an orange tip that was painted gray to make it look real.

McKinney was booked into the Maricopa County Jail and charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and one count of harming a work/service animal for punching the Police K-9.

The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
