Jet skier dies on Long Island

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Suffolk County police say jet skier was killed when he ran into an anchor line near the New York State Boat Channel in the Great South Bay on Long Island Saturday afternoon.

According to police 33-year-old Michael Mignone crashed his Yamaha jet ski after he circled his 20-foot Trophy boat just before 5:00 p.m.

Mignone was recovered by the Coast Guard and taken to a beach in Lindenhurst using his own boat. He was then transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say the incident appears accidental and Mignone's boat and jet ski were taken to be tested for safety issues.

This is the second fatality on jet skis in the last few days. Two people drowned in the waters off Coney Island Thursday when one of the passengers fell off and the driver attempted to save her by diving in.

Neither of the two victims was wearing life jackets which police say may have caused both to drown.
