STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK) -

A child was recording cell phone video of fireworks on his street when something suddenly went wrong. In that video, he yells "that was scary" as neighbors scramble and run for cover.

Police told us an eight-year-old girl was burned and rushed to the hospital when a tube holding one of the fireworks tipped over and shot the explosive sideways at a garage.

Neighbors and police rushed over to help. Mike Prisza was a few doors down with his six-year-old daughter. Both were shaken up.

"We were out having a good time, and we just heard just like a regular firework, but then all of a sudden there was just like pandemonium down the street," Mike Prisza explained.

"My thoughts of fireworks that they can get you really hurt and burned," said Riley Prisza.

A day later, remnants of all kinds of fireworks still littered Steel Drive. The loud blast blew out the back window of a minivan. Police said four or five adults also suffered minor injuries.

"These things are dangerous. You need to know the dangers. You need to know that this type of thing cannot be set off and expected to do what it's supposed to do. They don't always go up in the air," said Sue Leszczynski.

She said her house shook and pictures fell during the blast.

Police told us one neighbor was ticketed for setting fireworks off in the street and on the sidewalk. That person could face a fine of up to $500.

Up until 2012, Michigan was one of several states that banned big fireworks. Now that the ban has been lifted, police say people need to know the laws and handle explosives with care.

The girl and the others injured are expected to recover.
