WHITEFIELD, N.H. (AP) - Two years after being shot in the head, former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona is calling on New Hampshire's political leaders to have courage in the fight to expand background checks on gun purchases.

She appeared at a downtown Manchester press conference Friday alongside state law enforcement officials and her husband, Mark Kelly, a former Navy pilot and astronaut.

Giffords says that "stopping gun violence takes courage."

The 42-year-old former congresswoman survived an assassination attempt in January 2011 that left six people dead. Now, she's in the midst of a seven-state tour to press for background check legislation currently stalled in a divided Congress.

Earlier in the day, Kelly purchased a rifle at the Village Gun Shop in Whitefield, a popular stop for Republican politicians courting New Hampshire voters.
