Suspect in shooting outside Kroger surrenders to police

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -

The man accused of a shooting a 2-year-old child outside of a grocery store in Stone Mountain has turned himself into police.

Authorities had been searching for Chazerel Burton, 21, since the shooting last Wednesday.

Police said that the victim's father had confronted Burton in the parking lot of a Kroger store at Memorial Drive and N. Hairston.  Burton had allegedly just robbed a pedestrian. A confrontation ensued and the alleged robber fired as many as 15 shots into the Good Samaritan's car, striking his 2-year-old child in the abdomen, according to police.

The child was transported to the hospital and is expected to be OK.

DeKalb County police said that Burton surrendered to authorities on Thursday.
