Express lanes on I-75 clear another hurdle

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Manages express lanes intended to ease rush-hour traffic congestion along I-75, just south of metro Atlanta, are getting closer to becoming a reality for drivers Wednesday.

The Federal Highway Administration announced it granted environmental approval to the Georgia Department of Transportation's plan for the construction of 12 miles of managed Express Lanes.

Georgia DOT received approval of an Environmental Assessment with a Finding of No Significant Impact from FHWA on June 28.

The GDOT plans to build variable-rate toll lanes along I-75 between State Routes 155 and 138 in Henry and Clayton counties.  Two lanes will be added in the center median of I-75 from State Route 138 in south Clayton to just north of State Route 20 and one reversible lane, also in the center median, will extend from that point to State Route 155 in Henry.

The lanes will be barrier-separated and reversible -- carrying traffic northbound in the mornings and southbound in afternoons and evenings.  Motorists will be able to utilize the I-75 express lanes if they choose to participate in the State Road and Tollway Authority's Peach Pass program which uses remote transponders to assess variable-rate tolls based on traffic volumes.

Last Friday's EA/FONSI came after two public hearings and several community briefings were held on the project, a public comment period was conducted, and evaluation and incorporation of those comments into the final document was completed.

The EA/FONSI clears the way for Georgia DOT to award a contract on the project once it concludes its ongoing review of pending bid proposals.
