Bloomberg backing Bill Daley for Ill. governor

CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is backing former White House chief of staff Bill Daley for Illinois governor.

In a video posted online late Monday, Bloomberg says Daley is "uniquely qualified to lead Illinois in these challenging times."

He calls Daley a strong leader who "will fight for common sense gun laws."

Daley announced last month he was forming a committee to explore a 2014 bid. He would face Gov. Pat Quinn in a Democratic primary.

Bloomberg is a staunch gun control supporter. Earlier this year his super PAC spent $2.2 million helping anti-gun candidate Robin Kelly win the Democratic primary for Illinois' 2nd congressional district.

Bloomberg's video was released hours before Quinn announced he was vetoing parts of concealed carry gun legislation to make the measure more restrictive.
