Ga. county disputes service charges with new city

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. (AP) - Leaders of a newly-created city are working with DeKalb County officials to determine how much they should pay for certain county services.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Monday (http://bit.ly/1avC3r7 ) that leaders of Brookhaven - which incorporated in December - say $500,000 should be enough to pay the county for police and park maintenance service for about six months.

A deal between city leaders and county officials in March initially called for Brookhaven to pay the county about $525,000 monthly for police protection, and $400,000 for 11 months of park maintenance.

In a letter to the county, city officials offered to pay $500,000 for six months of police service and nothing for help with the parks.

Officials say they'll continue negotiating, although the county is expected to finalize its midyear budget soon.
