NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Many counties in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut tristate area are under a Flash Flood Watch and some counties are also under a Flash Flood Warning.

The heavy rain and powerful winds from the thunderstorms that blew through the area caused significant damage in several communities, including Yonkers.

More than two dozen families in Yonkers have been displaced because of the storm damage caused by a suspected microburst. The roof of a building was tornoff and flew onto another building down the street almost a block away.

A microburst is a powerful downdraft of wind with an affected outflow area of less than 2.5 miles wide and peak winds lasting less than five minutes, according to the National Weather Service.

Most of the damage in Yonkers was concentrated on the southwest side, on and around Willow Street and Riverdale Avenue.

Excessive runoff from heavy rain has caused flooding of urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses and low-lying areas.

"With heavy rain and possible flash flooding expected in parts of the state, I urge all New Yorkers to take extreme caution, including closely monitoring local radio and television for weather alerts and listening to the advice of local officials," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. "Many communities have already been hit hard by flooding, and the state is deploying every resource available to help affected areas and residents."

During a Flash Flood Warning, you should move to higher ground and not attempt to drive through water-covered roads.

A Tornado Warning for Fairfield County in Connecticut expired at 11:30 a.m.

A Tornado Warning for portions of New Jersey was canceled earlier Monday morning.

NJ Transit is offering system wide cross-honoring on bus, rail and light rail due to severe weather conditions.

Service on the Morris and Essex lines has resumed from Dover to Summit.

Service on the Gladstone Branch has resumed with residual delays.

Superstorm Sandy turned this region upside down, destroying homes, obliterating businesses, ruining coastlines, and uprooting lives. Like so many, I watched as Sandy reduced our beach-side towns to rubble. In the two years that have passed, the focus has been on rebuilding getting people back on their feet. But what if you could fight Mother Nature?Hurricanes are fueled by the heat and energy in warm ocean water.
