Deadly Fire Ravages Couple's Home After Returning From Vacation

Posted: Updated:
TOWNSEND, Del. -

One person is dead and two people injured after a fire ravages a home in Townsend, Delaware.

Neighbors snapped pictures of a deadly fire that lit up the night sky and destroyed the home. "It looked like a bonfire," exclaimed Mark Owens.

"We were freaking!" said Jineva Rios.

That's because the flames came dangerously close to a propane tank, threatening the safety of neighbors and her three young children.

"They were shaking, saying 'Are we going to die? Are we going to die!'"

Family members tell FOX 29 that the 62-year-old homeowner and her boyfriend were in the house on the 700 block of Money Road when it went up in flames around 11:00 p.m. Saturday night.

That 62-year-old woman is Norman Younger's stepdaughter. She made it out alive.

"She was completely black, smoke and fingers, black hands and face...everything," described Younger.

Younger visited his stepdaughter at Christiana Hospital Saturday night where she's being treated for smoke inhalation. "She talked in between coughing," he said.

Hours before the fire started, the couple had just returned from vacation. When his stepdaughter woke to the smell of smoke, she immediately tried to get her boyfriend out of the burning house. He didn't make it.

"She told me she tried to get him awake to follow her and she thought he was following her. She got outside and turned around and looked and he wasn't there. She tried to go back and the heat was too extreme," said Younger.

What caused the fire that killed one person and injured two people including a firefighter is still under investigation. Investigators say there were no smoke detectors in the house.

Family has asked FOX 29 not to release the names of either victim at this time.

We're told the woman who survived the deadly fire will be released from Christiana Hospital on Monday.
