Barrow says he will challenge Duggan's write-in candidacy for Detroit mayor

DETROIT (WJBK) -

Mike Duggan has said he is back in the race, and his supporters dig his decision. Duggan declared Friday that he will become a write-in candidate for the mayor of Detroit.

But guess who is back to burst Duggan's bubble?

"Judge Popke's order was explicit," said mayoral candidate Tom Barrow. "It said that Mr. Duggan was ineligible to be a candidate in the August 6 primary under any circumstance."

"It's over. It's ended. The court has ruled," he added. "They say you can't be eligible for the August 6 primary ballot. You can't write your name in."

In the past, Barrow has taken what some may call digs at Duggan, and now he is calling the write-in candidate's move to become mayor "creepy."

"After four judges, the Detroit City Charter, the Court of Appeals, the Circuit Court all saying no, but he's continuing to try to force himself onto us. You know, that's kind of creepy," Barrow said.

For the people who may be asking why won't Barrow just back off, he said, "That would just mean that we would just allow people to just violate our City Charter."

Barrow said if Duggan does not bow out, he will put on his boxing gloves again.

"On Monday, we're going to issue a letter to the Detroit city clerk, and we're going to urge her to issue a statement of declaration of uncandidacy," he explained. "By Wednesday, if the city clerk has not issued a declaration of uncandidacy, we'll be filing another lawsuit."

Barrow is convinced that Duggan is out for August, and he believes the law is on his side.

"It's the same old stuff," Duggan told Fox 2 Friday night during a live interview. "The point of democracy is supposed to be that you have candidates campaign against each other and voters make choices, and obviously Tom Barrow doesn't in any way, shape or form want to have to run against me. But my statutory right to do a write-in campaign is unquestioned, and we're just going to move forward."
