Good Samaritan Mike Patterson dies

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Mike Patterson, the Good Samaritan who drew national attention after diving into a creek to save a child, has died.

A message posted on the Friends of Mike Patterson Facebook page early Friday morning said:

"We pray for a peace that surpasses all understanding. We find comfort and solace in knowing that Mike is whole and healthy again, walking in the Kingdom."

On www.friendsofmikepatterson.com, a statement confirmed Patterson's death early Friday via his brother, Brian Meadows.  Patterson was 43 years old.  The statement said Mike's family was by his side when he passed away.

Patterson severed his spinal cord earlier this month after diving into Euharlee Creek in Rockmart to save a toddler who was being swept away.  His own 9-year-old son witnessed the accident.  Since the incident, Patterson has been hospitalized in intensive care.

Friends and co-workers said they weren't surprised to hear that Mike put his life at risk to help another person.

"Mike just did the same thing that he would want anybody to do for his kids, for his sons, his boys," said Michael Jackson.

Jackson said he hopes that everyone remembers mikes ultimate sacrifice, and tries to emulate his heroism.

"Think about him. Think about his story. Try to be that person whenever you get yourself in them shoes. That's all you really need to do," Jackson said.

Patterson's funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Gammage Funeral Home Chapel, according to the Friends of Mike Patterson Facebook page.

Visitation will be held on Saturday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Gammage Funeral Home Chapel.
