Tucker girl wins national braille competition

Posted: Updated:
TUCKER, Ga. -

A 10-year-old girl who has been blind since she was a baby is turning adversity into achievement.

Kendra Holloway has become one of the best braille readers in the country.  The Tucker student began learning braille when she was 3. She recently tested her skills against some of America's best and brightest at the National Braille Challenge.

"For writing, they call out a word and we spell it. We don't say anything though. We just write it on the braillers," Holloway said.

The event in Los Angeles is more than a spelling bee.

"Spelling, proofreading and reading comprehension," Holloway said it includes.

The fifth grader admitted to being a little nervous before the competition began, but in the end she took home the first-place trophy.

"I felt like I was doing my best," she said. "It was nice."

Holloway hopes to make the cut and compete again next year.
